The Number Of People Experiencing Homelessness Increased 1% Between 2016 & 2017

Between 2016 and 2017, the number of people experiencing homelessness increased almost 1%, from approximately 548,259 in 2016 to 553,742 in 2017. This equals 17 people experiencing homelessness for every 10,000 people in the United States. In 2017, New York had the highest rate of people experiencing homelessness, at 45 people per 10,000 residents; while Iowa had the lowest rate of people experiencing homelessness, at 8 people per 10,000 residents.
