Sacramento Launches Anti-Gang Violence Program With Advance Peace
The city of Sacramento, California has launched the Advance Peace Gun Violence Reduction Program. The program pays a stipend to participants who are at risk of shootings, in return for participation in activities to exit criminal behaviors.
In 2015, Sacramento experienced a 54% increase in gun-related homicides, and a 47% increase in firearm assaults, from 2014. On August 29, 2017, the Sacramento City Council voted to contract with Advance Peace to administer the program. Advance Peace previously ran a successful gang violence prevention program in Richmond, California that resulted in a 50% reduction in the city's homicide rate . . .
