Iowa Agrees To Change Special Education Requirements

The Iowa Department of Education is making changes to special education requirements that were ordered by an administrative judge in March 2017. Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, the state will no longer require that students have a “significant or severe discrepancy” in school performance and age or grade-based standards in order to provide the student with special education services. The expectation of general education is that all children will attain the educational standards of the local education agency (LEA) and the expectations of the Iowa Core or the Iowa Early Learning Standards.
