Buprenorphine For Opioid Use Treatment Cuts 30-Day Hospital Readmission Rates By Half

People with opioid use disorder (OUD) who were taking buprenorphine when admitted to the hospital for acute medical or surgical care were 53% less likely to be readmitted within 30 days, and 43% less likely to be readmitted within 90 days than people with OUD who were not taking buprenorphine prior to admission. The overall 30-day readmission rate for people with OUD was 18.1%, and the 90-day readmission rate was 32.1%. Among those taking buprenorphine at admission the 30-day readmission rate was 12.9%, and the 90-day rate was 15.9%.
