Half Of Consumers With Autism Have Co-Occurring Disorders

About half of youth and adults with autism have co-occurring disorders, according to a survey of Rhode Island residents with autism. The survey included 1,000 people aged 21 months to 64 years with an autism diagnosis, suspected autism, or a neurodevelopmental disorder. About 47% of the participants reported having another neurodevelopmental disorder, such as an intellectual disability. About 44% reported having a co-occurring psychiatric disorder, such as depression, bipolar disorder, or obsessive compulsive disorder. About 50.1% of the participants were prescribed at least one psychiatric medication at the survey baseline.
