Humana Medicare Advantage Beneficiaries Had Better Outcomes Than Medicare Fee-For-Service

During 2019, the 2.41 million Humana individual Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries receiving care from primary care physicians (PCP) in value-based payment (VBP) models experienced, on average, better health outcomes compared to beneficiaries in original Medicare fee-for-service (FFS). The Humana MA members cared for by PCPs in VBP models had 10.3% fewer emergency department visits and fewer hospital days. The Humana MA members had a 29.2% lower hospital admission rate than the Medicare FFS rate.
