California Law Allows Exchange Members To Add Parents As Dependents
On October 6, 2021, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation allowing people enrolled in a Covered California, Health Insurance Exchange plan to claim their parents and step-parents as dependents, effective January 1, 2023. California is the only state with such a law in place.
Assembly Bill 570 (AB 570), also known as the Parent Healthcare Act, requires health care service plans or policies active on or after January 1, 2023 to make dependent coverage available for parents and stepparents.
