Medicare To Eliminate Many Limitations To Behavioral Health Telehealth Beginning January 1, 2022
On November 2, 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) includes provisions to eliminate geographic limitations to reimbursement for behavioral health treatment via telehealth. The provisions also end the requirement that beneficiaries receive telehealth behavioral health services at a provider organization site, so that the telehealth session can take place wherever the beneficiary is located. The finalized changes apply to counseling and therapy services, including treatment of addiction disorders and services provided through opioid treatment programs.
