For Low-Income Households, Average Total Expenditure For Antidepressants Dropped 33% Between 2013 & 2018

The average total expenditure for antidepressants prescribed to people in households below 200% of the federal poverty level (FPL) was one-third lower in 2018 compared to 2013. For low-income households, the average total expenditure per fill also declined from $73 to $49. The data was collected in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Household Component (MEPS-HC). For those covered by public health insurance, the average total expenditure per fill dropped by 31%, from $80 to $55, and their out-of-pocket costs (OOP) for antidepressant fills remained unchanged at $6 over the five-year period.
