Acquiring A Medical Marijuana Card Linked To Development Of Cannabis Use Disorder Within 12 Weeks

About 17% of adults ages 18 to 65 diagnosed with insomnia, pain, or anxiety who obtained medical marijuana cards immediately after receiving a qualifying diagnosis developed cannabis use disorder in the first 12 weeks. Among a similarly diagnosed group who waited 12 weeks before obtaining a medical marijuana card, 8.6% developed CUD within 12 weeks. According to other studies of recreational cannabis users, about 30% of users develop CUD, which is defined as reports of higher tolerance and continued use despite the recurrent physical or psychological problems caused or exacerbated by cannabis.
