Massachusetts Jails & Prisons Required To Offer Medication-Assisted Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder
On April 1, 2022, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts announced that all state and county correctional facilities will maintain all medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). Currently buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone are approved by the FDA for this purpose. The correctional facilities will maintain medication assisted treatment (MAT) for people already in treatment for OUD prior to entering the facility’s custody. The announcement emphasized that maintenance of medication treatment for inmates with OUD is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
