Making The Holding Company Model Work: Lessons, Pitfalls & Partnership Paths

June 26, 2025

1:00 – 2:00 pm ET

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have long been a strategic path for nonprofits aiming to scale, boost efficiency, or expand market presence. Yet growth through M&A often remains elusive. As an alternative, the holding company model is emerging as a flexible, innovative approach that fosters growth without sacrificing local autonomy or mission identity.

In this one-hour live presentation, OPEN MINDS Senior Associates Rick Rowley and Dee DeWitt will moderate a discussion with Natalie Tortorello, Chief Operating Officer at Our House, Inc., and Karen Maziarz, Chief Financial & Strategy Officer at Youth and Family Alternatives (YFA) about the mechanics of the holding company model and where it outperforms traditional partnerships.

Discussion topics will include how this model differs from other growth strategies, how shared services and centralized governance support local innovation, where holding companies create leverage, what’s required for success, and why some affiliations fail.

Ms. Tortorello and Ms. Maziarz will also share their firsthand insights, including from an unsuccessful affiliation experienced by Our House, Inc. and how YFA is using a more refined approach to build sustainable, future-ready partnerships.

What You’ll Learn

  • How the holding company model supports growth while honoring local roots
  • Why it can be a strong alternative to full mergers or acquisitions
  • Lessons from affiliations that fell short and how to avoid common missteps
  • Why more organizations are turning to this model to scale successfully
