According to the American Medical Association, behavioral health is defined as “mental health and substance use disorders, life stressors and crises, and stress-related physical symptoms. Behavioral health care refers to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of those conditions.” 57.8 million adults, or one in five, live with a mental illness or substance use disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health.
In 2022, the U.S. invested $329 billion in total behavioral health spending (94% increase since 2012). Total behavioral health spending in the U.S. includes spending for mental health (MH) and substance use disorder (SUD).
