Pharmacy chain Walgreens and Uber Technologies, Inc., a global leader in ridesharing and on-demand delivery technology, announced an agreement to improve access to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines for people in underserved communities. They plan to roll out several initiatives over the coming months as COVID-19 vaccines become available for mass distribution
The initiatives include the following:
- Free transportation to Walgreens stores and offsite vaccine clinics as part of a larger commitment by Uber to provide up to 10 million free or discounted rides to vaccinations. Pilot transportation programs will begin in cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, and El Paso.
- One-click access to pre-schedule rides on Uber when a Walgreens vaccination appointment is made. After appointments are confirmed, consumers will receive also an email extending the offer to schedule a ride.
- New in-app features designed to more seamlessly connect people, including active drivers, delivery people, and freight carriers using Uber, Uber Eats or Uber Freight, with vaccines when they become more readily available.
- Discussions are underway for a new educational program with the Chicago Urban League to address vaccine hesitancy.
Walgreens is included in the Retail Pharmacy USA Division of Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., a global leader in retail and wholesale pharmacy. Its more than 9,000 retail locations across America, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands serve about 8 million consumers daily. Its pharmacists provide a wide range of pharmacy and health care services.
Uber Health is a HIPAA-secure solution that enables its various partners within the health care industry to request non-emergency medical transportation for consumers, with the goal of improving access to care by easing transportation barriers. Uber Health is participating in a larger Uber initiative to provide on-demand and scheduled last-mile delivery solutions to consumers and businesses.
