“Integration” has been a focus for specialty provider organization executive teams for a while now. In 2009, the federal government's SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions started awarding grants and offering technical assistance to improve integration in community health centers and community mental health centers. These initiatives were focused on improving quality of care, particularly for consumers with the most serious mental health conditions. And the integration models were largely focused on combining behavioral health services and primary care services in the same practice model.
