Deaths associated with alcohol, drugs, and suicide took the lives of 186,763 Americans in 2020—a record number of substance misuse deaths in a single year and a 20% one-year increase. The 2020 increase was "unprecedented" according to the recent report, Pain in the Nation: The Epidemics of Alcohol, Drug, and Suicide Deaths, driven by a 27% and 30% increase in alcohol-induced deaths and drug-induced deaths respectively.
