The Mountain In The Way To ACO Success
Earlier this spring, my colleague Sarah Threnhauser made a passing reference to the “oligopolistic nature of accountable care organizations (ACOs)” which Regina Herzlinger of the Harvard Business School predicts will run afoul of anti-trust laws (see The Focused Factories Of Health Care). So far, this hasn’t happened. Many ACOs are just in their formative stage, and their coverage is limited. In fact there are approximately 606 ACOs, and at last report, ACOs enrolled of approximately six percent of the U.S. population (19 million) (see Accountable Care Growth In 2014: A Look Ahead).
