Would You Consider Paying Your Non-Profit Board?

Last week, I discussed the increasingly complex governance issues for health and human service organizations – a discussion precipitated by the announcement that the board of non-profit Tampa General Hospital had voted to compensate their directors (see Should Non-Profit Boards Get Paid?). Since then, the board has reversed that decision (see Tampa General Governing Board Backtracks, Decides Not To Pay Itself After All). But I think the overarching issue of non-profit competitiveness and sustainability – and the derivative issue of the governance model and role of the board (including compensation) – will heat up over the next couple years.
