The New Stats On The New Payer Landscape
What payer provides the most health insurance coverage for Americans? If you asked that question before the passage of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), you would get a very different answer from today.
Rolling back five or more years, commercial (and employer-sponsored) insurance topped the list at 64% of the population in 2010 (see Health Insurance Highlights: 2010). Medicare was the next biggest payer (12.9%) in 2010 (see The Facts on Medicare Spending and Financing), and the rate of uninsurance was 16.3% (see Health Insurance Highlights: 2010).
