January 17, 2005 SAMHSA Launches Suicide Hotline On December 31, 2004, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) launched the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a network of crisis centers and communities specializing in suicide prevention. The hotline is part of the National Suicide Prevention Initiative (NSPI), and is directed by John Draper, Ph.D. NSPI is an effort led by SAMHSA that incorporates the most effective practices and research findings in suicide prevention and intervention.
