Texas Cost Of Care For Diabetes Estimated at $18.5 Billion Annually
In 2011, about 1.7 million Texas residents were diagnosed with diabetes; the cost of care for this population exceeded $18.5 billion, including $12.3 billion in direct medical costs, $6.2 billion in indirect costs and $21 million in diabetes prevention programs. Direct medical costs were $7.4 billion to the public sector, including Medicaid (2%), Medicare (46%) and combined costs for duel eligibles (12%); and $4.9 billion to the private sector, including private insurance (30%) and costs not covered by insurance (10%).
