South Carolina Expanding Medicaid Managed Care in Spring 2011
On January 11, 2011, the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that it would transition most Medicaid beneficiaries to managed care plans. Starting in April 2011, 80,000 beneficiaries will be required to choose among several plans offered through the state’s Healthy Connections Choices care coordination program, which started in August 2007. In general, managed care will be mandatory for children up to age 19, families with at least one child, people who only receive temporary Medicaid due to increased earnings, pregnant women, and aged, blind, or disabled adults.
