6.1 Million U.S. Children Have Disabled Parents
About 6.1 million of the 60 million children in the United States have a parent with a disability; these children represent about 10% of the nation’s children. These parents, about 4.1 million individuals, represent about 6.2% of all parents in the United States. Parents with disabilities are at a high risk of being involved with the child welfare system. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, 12.9% of maltreated children had a caregiver with a disability.
