CMS Announces 106 New ACO Contracts; 260 ACOs Now In Operation
On January 10, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it had selected 106 new Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. This brings the total number of Medicare ACOs to 260. In July 2012, CMS announced that there were 154 ACOs in operation. The 106 new ACOs serve four million people with Medicare across the United States. ACOs are organizations formed by groups of doctors and other health care providers that have agreed to work together to coordinate care for Medicare beneficiaries.
