12% of Health Data Exchanges Self-Sustaining in 2011
In 2011, 24 of the 196 health information data exchanges (HIE) in operation in the United States reported being self-sustaining and no longer dependent on grant funds; in 2010, only 18 were self-sustaining. There were 196 health data exchanges in operation both years. Those that are self-sustaining have developed and implemented a long-term business model to support operations. Membership fees are the most widely used revenue model for sustainability.
