20% Of Families Have Problems Paying Off Medical Debt

In 2012, 21.4% of the United States population lived in a family experiencing financial difficulty paying off medical bills and used a credit card, took out a loan, or arranged a long-term payment schedule with a health care provider organization. During the previous 12 months, about 16.5% of families had financial difficulties paying off medical bills. About 8.9% of families with medical debt incurred in the past 12 months were unable to pay.
