Federal Spending on Health Care Programs to Reach $1.8 Trillion by 2022, an increase of 100% Over 10 Years
By 2022, federal spending on Medicare, Medicaid, and other health care programs is expected to reach $1.8 trillion; currently federal spending on these programs is estimated at $900 million. The projection attributed most of the increase to the aging population and rising costs for health care as Medicare enrollment increases from 48 million in 2011 to 66 million in 2022. Medicare spending is expected to increase from $560 billion in 2011 to $1.4 trillion in 2022.
