Non-profit hospitals in the United States reported that in 2009, 5.7% of their expenses went to provide free or discounted care to low-income, uninsured, or underinsured patients and to cover the difference between the cost of care and reimbursements for patients covered by means-tested health care insurance, such as Medicaid.
