Illinois Department of Corrections Overhauls Early Release Program

OPEN MINDS Weekly News Wire Social Services On December 30, 2009, Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) Director Michael P. Randle said the department planned to overhaul its prison release program by adopting an integrated approach to crime risk and detention. The key point of the overhaul—implementation of a standardized set of validated risk and needs assessment instruments for use in the system. The overhaul will also focus on reducing the number of offenders who are sent to IDOC. IDOC manages about 45,000 adult inmates annually; most serve six months or less.
