U.S. House of Representatives Approves Paul Wellstone Mental Health & Addiction Equity Act

On March 5, 2008, the US House of Representatives voted 268 to 148 to approve the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act, House Resolution (HR) 1424. The bill would eliminate barriers to mental health treatment posed by different deductibles, lifetime coverage caps, and higher copayments. It is the first legislation that addresses equal coverage for addiction treatment and if adopted, insurers would be required to include benefits for any mental health condition listed in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders.
