OPEN MINDS Weekly News Wire Children's Services In the United States, about 1.5 million children were homeless at least once during the 2005-2006 school year; this number is expected to increase for the 2008-2009 school year due to economic turbulence. The national average was about 2.0%, or one in every 50 children. In states with the lowest percentages of homeless children, the rate was less than 0.75%. The states with the lowest percentages were Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and New Hampshire. Overall, about 75% of homeless children were in 11 states . . .
