Mercer County New Jersey to Close Youth Detention Center in Ewing

Share In June 2011, Mercer County, New Jersey is planning to close the 80-bed Youth Detention Center in the city of Ewing. In 2008, the county was selected to participate in a pilot Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) with the state; by 2010, the county had reduced the average daily census at the center to only 19 youth on any given day. The closure of the Ewing facility has not yet been approved by the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC); however, Mercer County is forging an agreement with Middlesex County to send its juvenile offenders to a Middlesex . . .
