First Quarter 2009 Health Care Merger & Acquisition Activity Driven by Pfizer & Merck Deals
OPEN MINDS Weekly News Wire Strategic Health Care News In the first quarter of 2009 there were 199 health care-related mergers and acquisitions with a total value of $127.4 billion. The total number of deals was down 13% from the first quarter of 2008, and from the fourth quarter of 2009. The greatest activity was among biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, and e-health companies, with 126 deals. The pharmaceutical sector had a total of 37 deals including two large deals during the first quarter: PfizerÂ’s $68.0 billion acquisition of Wyeth, and MerckÂ’s $41.1 billion . . .
