Psychiatrist Compensation Is $185,000 Annually, Up 1% Over 2011

Psychiatrist compensation in 2012 averaged $186,000 annually, about one percent higher than 2011. Psychiatrists who are independent contractors, as opposed to employees, earn more on average. Additionally, psychiatrists who practiced as part of a partnership earned more on average than those who practiced solo. Average psychiatrist compensation was among the lowest for 25 medical specialties; the range of compensation spanned from $405,000 for orthopedists to $173,000 for pediatricians.
