May 14, 2007 Presence of Depression Symptoms Raises Risk of Diabetes by 50% in Older Adults Older adults with symptoms of depression had a 50% higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than adults without symptoms of depression, even in people with no other risk factors for diabetes. Increases in depression symptoms over time or persistently high scores on a depression questionnaire were both high-risk factors for later development of diabetes.
