May 22, 2006 County Attorney Sues El Paso, Texas MHMR for Denying Crisis Services to Mentally Ill On April 28, 2006, the El Paso, Texas, county attorney Jose Rodrigez, filed a lawsuit against the El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center (MHMR) for denying crisis treatment to mentally ill people. The suit names MHMR, the El Paso Psychiatric Center, and the Texas Health Services Department as defendants. The suit was filed after state funding cuts caused the centers to close their crisis services. As a result, mentally ill people in crisis must wait in hospitals until a treatment slot . . .
