HIT Changing Health Care Workforce—Billers Are Down & Care Coordinators Are Up
Adoption of health information technology and focus on care coordination by physician practices is changing demand for non-physician support staff, resulting in fewer billing and records staff and more care coordination staff. Employment drops are estimated at 25% for medical billers, 23% for billing managers, and 37% for medical records clerks. Physician practices are reporting the need for more staff in care coordination positions; about 20% of physician practices reported employing care coordinators, a position previously found primarily in large institutions or health plans.
