HHS Proposes Stronger Patient Control for Health Information

A new health information privacy rule proposed by the federal Department of Health and Human Services would give patients greater control over their health information. The proposed rule modifies the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules. If adopted as proposed, in addition to tracking access to patient health information, hospitals and health care organizations would be required, if patients asked, to provide a report of who has accessed and viewed the patient’s electronic health records beginning January 1, 2013.
