Of all the patients in California who were readmitted within one year after hospitalization, 551,891 patients (93%) had initially been admitted for general acute care; 43,089 patients (7%) had initially been admitted for psychiatric care; and less than one percent, or 2,993 patients, had initially been admitted for chemical dependency.
