Medicare ACO Count Up By 89 More, To 154

On July 9, 2012, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it had selected 89 more Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), bringing the total number of Medicare ACOs to 154. In April 2012, CMS said there were 65 ACOs in operation. The 89 new ACOs serve 1.2 million people with Medicare in 40 states and the District of Columbia; almost half of the new ACOs are physician-driven organizations serving fewer than 10,000 beneficiaries.
