Number of Health Information Exchanges Increases by 9% To 255 Nationwide in 2011
In 2011, the number of operational health information exchanges (HIEs) in the United States increased by nine percent, reaching 255. Among the 255, maintaining sustainability has become a critical issue; in 2010 only 24 were deemed sustainable and not dependent on federal funding. While 48 HIEs are planning to participate in accountable care organizations (ACO), 110 HIEs have not yet decided if they will participate in an ACO; 38 do not plan to participate,.
