Feds Release Health Insurance Exchange Details
On August 12, 2011, the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released proposed rules for health insurance exchanges (HIEs)—including coordination with Medicaid on eligibility determinations, premium tax credits for individuals, and participation of employers in the exchange. Health insurance exchanges, in which individuals can compare and purchase health insurance policies with baseline levels of coverage, were authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. The goal of the HIEs is to provide a streamlined system of health insurance coverage.
