1 In 8 People Worldwide Have A Mental Disorder
In 2019, approximately 12.5% of the nearly 7.7 billion people (1 in 8 people) worldwide were living with a mental disorder, representing approximately 970 million people. This includes about 14% of the world’s adolescents. During 2019, mental disorders were the leading cause of disability, causing 1 of every 6 years lived with disability.
The prevalence of specific mental disorders during 2019 was also estimated. An unknown number of individuals had co-occurring disorders and may be counted in multiple categories.
