About 10% of American adults have medical or dental debt, and about 5% of American adults owe $10,000 or more in health care debt.  Among those with health care debt, 40% owe at least $5,000 and 12.5% owe $10,000 or more. Among working-age adults (ages 18 to 64) health care debt was reported by 44% of those with health insurance, and by 62% of those who were uninsured.
