‘Underinsured’ Adults Increase From 7% To 8% of U.S. Population Between 2003 & 2010

Between 2003 and 2010, the number of underinsured adults in the United States increased from 16 million in 2003 (7% of the total adult U.S. population of 217 million) to 20 million in 2010 (8.5% of the adult U.S. population of 235 million). This is about an 25% increase. Low-income families were at highest risk of being uninsured, but the percentage of underinsured adults with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000 has also increased, from 5% in 2003 to 16% in 2010.
