53% Of Physicians Self-Employed, 41% Of Psychiatrists Self-Employed
About 53.2% of all physicians are self-employed and have ownership in the practice they work for; 41.8% of physicians are employees; and 5% are independent contractors. However, compared to the averages for all physicians, among psychiatrists, fewer are self-employed (41.2%), slightly more (48.7%) are employees, and about twice as many (10.2%) are independent contractors.
