October 8, 2001 DHHS Awards Funds to Promote Child Support Improvements Twelve states have been awarded more than $1.8 million in research and demonstration grants to  support programs for strengthening and improving the child support program. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson made the announcement on September 28, 2001. The grants will cover a substantial portion of the special projects' costs with the remaining costs coming from other federal child support enforcement funds.
