WellPoint Using IBM Watson To Improve Physician Decision Support

On September 12, 2011, health insurer WellPoint and IBM announced an agreement in which WellPoint will develop and launch physician decision support tools based on IBM’s Watson technology. WellPoint anticipates Watson will allow physicians to easily coordinate medical data programmed into Watson with specified patient factors to help identify the most likely diagnosis and treatment options in complex cases. The first clinical pilots with select physician groups are expected to start in early 2012. This is the first commercial application of the Watson computing system. IBM will develop the base Watson health care technology on which WellPoint's solution . . .
