About 11% of Kentucky residents in 2015 received Social Security disability payments, either through Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The SSI program is for people who have disabilities and have not worked enough quarters to qualify for SSDI. Between 1980 and 2015, the share of Kentucky residents receiving one of the two types of Social Security disability payments increased by 249% among adults and 449% among children.
