In 11 U.S. Cities, Majority Of Beds For Homeless Operated By Faith-Based Organizations
A study of 11 major cities across the United States revealed that faith-based organizations (FBOs) provide 58% of emergency shelter beds in those cities. According the report, there were approximately 565,000 Americans experiencing homelessness as of January 2015. That definition covers anyone sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program.
These findings were reported in “Assessing The Faith-Based Response To Homelessness In America: Findings From Eleven Cities,” by Byron Johnson and William H. Wubbenhorst of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University. The cities examined were Atlanta, Baltimore, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville . . .
